How a pouch is made

Pouchcraft
Victorian engraving of a nicotine pouch making machine
Our artist's take on a pouch factory. The real lines are modern, stainless and rather less Victorian.

Making a pouch is mostly about precision and cleanliness.

First, the dry ingredients (plant fibre, nicotine, pH balancer, sweetener) are blended to an even mix, then brought to the right moisture with water and flavour. Consistency matters: every pouch from a batch should taste and feel the same.

Next, the blend is measured into small portions and sealed inside a soft fleece pouch, the little sachet that sits under your lip. The machines dose each one to a set weight and nicotine level.

Finally, the pouches are counted into a can, the can is sealed, and it is labelled with strength and flavour.

The result is a small, consistent, tobacco-free pouch: the same in the last can as in the first.
