Nicotine pouch, snus or vape? An honest comparison

Snus has been banned from sale in the UK since 1992. Pouches and vapes are both legal there.

The short version

Nicotine pouch: a tobacco-leaf-free pouch placed under the upper lip. No smoke, vapour or device.

Snus: a moist oral tobacco product, traditionally associated with Sweden, also placed under the lip.

Vape: an electronic device that heats e-liquid to create an aerosol that is inhaled.

Nicotine pouch vs snus

Pouches and snus can look similar because both are used under the lip. The main difference is what they contain. Traditional snus contains tobacco. A nicotine pouch contains nicotine, plant-based filler, flavourings and other ingredients, but no tobacco leaf.

That distinction does not make nicotine pouches risk-free. Nicotine is addictive, and research on long-term pouch use is still developing. It does mean that tobacco-free pouches and snus should not be treated as interchangeable products.

In the United Kingdom, the sale of oral tobacco such as snus is prohibited, while tobacco-free nicotine pouches are a separate category. In everyday speech, people sometimes call pouches “snus”, but technically the terms are not the same.

Nicotine pouch vs vape

A vape delivers nicotine through inhalation. A battery heats liquid into an aerosol that is drawn into the lungs. A pouch releases nicotine through the lining of the mouth. It requires no battery, liquid, heating element or inhalation.

The practical experience is different too. A pouch is discreet, hands-free and produces no cloud. A vape offers an inhaled sensation and ritual that some adults prefer. Both contain nicotine and neither is harmless.

How do they compare with cigarettes?

The clearest difference is combustion. Cigarettes burn tobacco and create smoke containing many harmful chemicals. Nicotine pouches, snus and vapes do not burn tobacco. That does not make them safe, and it does not mean every product has the same risk profile.

In June 2026, the FDA allowed 20 specific ZYN products to carry a modified-risk claim comparing complete substitution for cigarettes with continued smoking. That authorisation applies to those products and that specific claim; it is not a blanket endorsement of every nicotine pouch.

Which one is right for you?

For an adult who already uses nicotine, the answer depends on preference and circumstances. A pouch may suit someone who wants discretion and nothing to inhale. A vape may suit someone who values the sensation of a draw. Traditional snus is not legally sold in the UK. The lowest-risk option is not to use nicotine at all.

Where Hus Vannin stands
